The Mughal Empire (Urdu: مغلیہ سلطنت, Mug̱ẖliyah Salṭanat)[6] or Mogul Empire,[7] self-designated as Gurkani (Persian: گورکانیان, Gūrkāniyān, meaning "son-in-law"),[8] was an empire based in the Indian Subcontinent, established and ruled by a Muslim Persianate[7][9] dynasty of Chagatai Turco-Mongol origin[10][11][12] that extended over large parts of the Indian subcontinent and Afghanistan.
